The millennium dome was officially inaugurated in England on the 1st of January,2001. In Greenwich the world's biggest dome was prepared on the Meridian Line to celebrate the landmark event of witnessing a new millennium. It became closed to the visitors on 31st December 2000, a few hours before the beginning of the new millennium. It again reopened on 24th June 2007 and at that moment it was renamed as the O2 . On this very day Tony Blair resigned from the post of the leader of the Labor Party.

When the Dome was first constructed it was greatly criticized by the politicians and social scientists all over England. But, now it has become one of the pride of London as well as of England. On 31st of May 2005 the Millennium Dome has been transformed into a sports arena and it has been planned to host the World Gymnastics Championships, artistic gymnastics, major basket ball events, Summer Olympic games(2012) and two National Hokey leagues.
