Based in New Delhi, India, Air Sahara is a privately owned airline. Along with the domestic market, Air Sahara is also catering to the requirements of the international passengers and has a wide network of destinations throughout the world. Air Sahara also provides helicopter services for special requirements such as charter services and aerial photography. Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, Begumpet Airport, Hyderabad, Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai, Chennai International Airport, Chennai and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata are some of the hubs in India from where this airline functions.
Established in the year 1991, Air Sahara finally began operating in the year 1993. At that time this airline consisted of only two Boeing 737-200 aircraft. At the first instance, Air Sahara catered only to the northern sectors of India. Gradually, this airline expanded its services all over the country and today, not only domestic but also international destinations are what covered by Air Sahara. Formerly known as Sahara Airlines, this airline was renamed on 2nd October as Air Sahara. Its international ventures began in the year 2004 with flights from Chennai to Colombo.
Earlier during 2007, Jet Airways bought Air Sahara for a huge 14.5 billion rupees. This buyout ensured a whopping 32% share in the domestic market. Currently, Air Sahara covers New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Vishakhapatnam, Kolkata, Cochin, Coimbatore, Pune, Goa, Lucknow, Patna, Srinagar, Port Blair, Jammu, Nagpur, Bhubaneshwar and Ahmedabad. On the other hand, some of the international destinations covered by Air Sahara include Colombo, Katmandu, Kuala Lumpur, Maldives and Singapore. Helicopter services are available for traveling between Mumbai and Delhi. This airline also code shares with the Chicago based American Airlines for a Delhi-Chicago international route.
Currently, the fleet of Air Sahara comprises of 2 Boeing 737-300s, 4 Boeing 737-400s, 8 Boeing 737-700, 2 Boeing 737-700BBJs, 6 Boeing 737-800s, 3 Bombardier CRJ-200ERs, 4 Bombardier CRJ-200LR. Along with these passenger carriers, Air Sahara also has 3 Ecureuil Helicopters and 1 Dauphin Helicopter for operating occasionally on non-scheduled routes.
