Originally started out as a handling agent, Air Mauritius gradually presumed the shape of an airline in the year 1972. At that time, Air Mauritius depended on a six-seater Piper PA-31 Navajo aircraft. With the passage of time, Air Mauritius started out its international operations in the year 1977. In those days it had only one Boeing 707 which it leased from British Air tours to serve the purpose. Later on, Air Mauritius replaced the Boeing 747s with the Airbus A340s. In fact, Air Mauritius was the first on in the whole of the southern hemisphere to fly an A340. Air Mauritius has also the distinction of being one of the few airlines in the world to introduce helicopter services along with the regular flights. In the later half of December 2006, Air Mauritius launched its new Airbus A340-300Es. These flying machines covered the destinations such as London Heathrow and Hong Kong.
