Air Malta

Headquartered at Luqa, Air Malta is the national airline of Malta. Operating in Europe and North Africa Air Malta covers more than 50 destinations. Malta International Airport, Luqa, Birmingham International Airport and Bristol International Airport, England are some of the major hubs from where Air Malta operates.

For a long time, the only options available to the Maltese people for travel were by the sea or via the foreign airlines, such as the British. But with the independence of Malta, the government decided to throw open its own airline. As a result of this, the seeds of Air Malta were sown and the airline finally took its shape on March 21, 1973. A resolution of the Malta House of Representatives was passed and Air Malta was granted the permission to operate on an international scale from Malta.

Officially Air Malta started to function on the 1st of April, 1974. At that time it had only two wet leased Boeing 720Bs. Rome, Tripoli, London, Manchester, Frankfurt and Paris were the main destinations that were covered by this airline during that time. In the year 1982, in an attempt to augment its operations, Air Malta purchased 3 new Boeing 737s. Furthermore, in the year 1986, this airline purchased another two new 737s and an Airbus A320 was ordered in the year 1987. With the passage of time, Catalina, Palermo, Tunis and Monastir were included as new operational areas of the airline.

In the year 1992, with the opening of the Malta International Airport, cargo operations were introduced in Air Malta. This meant transportation of cargo from one point to the other on Air Malta aircraft.

Furthermore, to bring in fresh blood into cargo transportations, a separate cargo center was inaugurated at the airport.

Currently, Air Malta comprises of Airbuses from the European airplane manufacturers. The present fleet of the airline mainly comprises of A319s and A320s.

So, if you are looking for a comfortable and relaxing journey, then choose Air Malta and be rest assured that you would have a memorable in-flight experience.
